I had a 2nd grader who was reading at a very high national percentile for words read per minute at the beginning of year. His previous teachers didn't focus on his foundations because he was such a good sight reader. He knew how to read words because he had been exposed to them, not because he had a solid foundation in phonemic awareness and phonics. Through the beginning of the year assessments on RH Discovery, I noticed that he really struggled phonetically. I soon began seeing how the holes he had phonetically were beginning to impact his learning. I immediately placed him in a group that was just working on foundational reading skills during our MTSS time. This group was solely using RH and the RH strategies. He was flooded with RH; he received whole class direct instruction, software instruction, and intensive RH small group instruction. By the end of the year he was still reading at a high national percentile but he no longer had holes phonetically. I am certain that he would have followed the national trend where reading levels begin to plateau at 4th grade if we had not used RH to address his holes.
