Reading Horizons Review: Joy McKinnis

This year I taught a bright but somewhat unmotivated young man. He had managed to get to the 8th grade still reading on a low 1st grade level. As a result, he struggled in most of his classes and was often a discipline problem. At the beginning of the year, this student made it clear that he did not like Reading Horizons or reading in general, but he soon stopped complaining about reading as his confidence in his own ability began to increase. After a while, he was the one helping other students code and sound out words. Even his behavior in reading class improved. This student is still not on grade level in reading. However, he has made so much gain that he now believes that he can be successful and is actually being more successful in all of his classes.
