Reading Horizons Review: Crystal Lubinski
Dyslexia (dyspraxia, dyscalcula, adhd, and add) runs in my family, so I am no stranger to struggling learners. My 8 yr old was struggling to read fluently. She knew all her phonetic sounds, and was very aware of her letters, but it was murder trying to read a simple sentence. She would sound out each and every letter of a simple 3 letter word about 3 to 4 times before she recognized the sounds the letters were making. This went on for about 3 years and numerous reading curriculum and strategies on my part. Finally I heard about Reading Horizons and watched every video I could find on your curriculum. I read every article and spoke to about 3 costumer service representatives to figure out if it looked any different than what I had already tried. After my research I decided to invest in the software to see if I liked it.
By the second lesson my struggling reader was reading fluently!!! By the end of the first week she was confident enough to read books in our home, that before she avoided like the plague.
Something had clicked, and she was loving reading. She began reading as many of the books in the virtual library as she could, and that gave her the confidence to move onto the books in our home libary.
I remember the day she asked if there were any books in the home I thought she could read, so I dusted off all the books that I had bought 3 years prior that she could not read b/c they were too overwhelming for her. She began devouring them book by book... FLUENTLY!!! It was a great day in our home. We all went out for icecream to celebrate our new found love of reading.
